Jacob’s gift was a tool for reconciliation, given freely to mend a broken relationship. The wisdom of God, however, warns us that not all gifts are so pure. They draw a sharp line between a gift and a bribe, which comes with dangerous strings attached.
The Book of Proverbs cautions that accepting certain gifts can lead to ruin. An offer designed to compromise your integrity or entangle you in a corrupt situation is not a gift but a trap.
He that is greedy of gain, troubled his own house, but he that hated gifts shall live (Proverbs 15:27).
This wisdom encourages discernment. True peace and a clear conscience sometimes require us to politely refuse an offer that, while tempting, could ultimately compromise our values or lead to future trouble. Integrity is worth more than any bribe.
