We call 1 Corinthians 13 the love chapter, and it teaches us that love is not just romantic. There’s agape love — the unconditional love of God. There’s phileo, friendship love. There’s eros, romantic love. Around Valentine’s Day, people mostly think about eros. But agape is king. Agape is how you should behave in every relationship. It pervades every other kind of love.
Apostle Paul goes on to say, “Though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.” That makes me want to cry. You can give everything you own to feed the poor. You can even become a martyr. But if you don’t have love, it profits you nothing.
We hear about millionaires and billionaires giving to the poor. That’s wonderful. It’s a good deed. Please continue giving. Scripture says when you give to the poor, you lend to the Lord. That’s beautiful. But giving alone does not mean you have love. Motive matters. If you don’t have love in your heart, if you don’t have the love of God, you can give everything away and still miss eternity.
There’s nothing greater than love. Love is the basis, the foundation, the focus. When you’re giving, when you’re serving, when you’re speaking, when you’re operating in gifts, love must be the foundation so that it will profit you in the end.
Love is the greatest.
